Shooting and reshooting my final stopmotion

Soo I had shot my first video, and taken about 500 photos which I realised was definitely not long enough, as I had only about 20 seconds when I imported my photos to After Effects.

Therefore I duplicated some s ticky note movements and/or reversed them as well to make them repeat and make my clip longer. Not all of these repetitions looked good however. Some repeated parts looked way dodgy and spastic, almost blinking if that made sense. Gave me a headache to look at and honestly gave me a laugh because it was so bad (:

This weekend I took some new photos of pens and other stationary such as scissors, a gluestick and pencil moving. Moreover, I made another sticky note thing on the blue backdrop instead of on the computer screen. I think it turned out quite well, definitely better than the other clips.

I deleted some of the old clips and made my video end with the new clip. I think it looks a LOT better now.

This is the first one:

And this is my improved, final video:

Stopmotion test clip

This is the really short test clip I did, I took about 32 photos and then my camera battery decided to die 🙂

Either way, my attempt wasn’t futile as I realized that I need to make small movements and take more frames for each scene as it is going by wayyyyy too fast. I need the days on the screen to appear for longer, and have more other movements per day to emphasize the passing of time.

I decided I would add crumpled papers, more pens/scissors and stuff around the desk, as just moving mugs wouldn’t be enough.

When it goes over to the sticky notes making patterns on the laptop I won’t have as much other distracting, moving objects around it.

Latest Storyboard

This is the last storyboard I made, though while filming a bit of stopmotion to practise, I realised <i would need a lot more footage to make it to 45 seconds. Things moved a lot faster than expected, 30 photos seemed less than 1 second even though I set my composition to 25 frames per second. Thus I will add some more scenes to the beginning, such as having the laptop slide into the frame, and take more photos for one movement to make it slower…

5 stop motion concepts

Idea 1: Racing toy cars

My first idea is to use two toy cars, a lambo and a ferrari and have them d racing each other. They’ll drift around little paper cones, and I’ll use torn cotton wads to create the illusion of a smoking exhaust. I found my inspiration to do this in a youtube video:

Idea 2: Tea time

This idea is inspired by the iconic scene in Beauty and the Beast where all the cutlery and kitchenware come alive. I would have spoons and teacups spinning around saucers, dancing and rotating around the teapot and the pot self would open and close. Furthermore, scones and cake appear and appear to get eaten up as they slowly disappear piece by piece.

Idea 3: Dancing shoes

A Pair of shoes dances to the music, shimmying, stepping, twirling and cha cha sliding and moonwalking to the beat. I would make use of transparent string to make certain movements, or wear the shoes and some colored socks to chroma key my legs out.

Idea 4: Sticky notes TO DO dance

Someone sticks a few to do lists on their desktop screen. While gone, the notes decode to do a bit of work of their own and take over the screen to make it their dance floor. The title “to do” is formed, and turns into “dance”. The notes then make different patterns across the screen. I was inspired by various images and clips of sticky note stop motions.

Idea 5: Pawn vs an army

My last and perhaps most imaginative idea is the story of an underdog. A single pawn faces an entire army on the chessboard. Against all odds, he defeats foe after foe and slays pawns, rooks, knights and bishops. When he reaches the queen and brings her to a fall, she surprises him and knocks him over in a final attempt at saving her husband the king. Our hero dies just short of reaching victory. It is a tale of courage and determination. I will use round cutouts of red paper to make it appear as though blood seeps out underneath him, and paper wings will sprout from his body as he is carried up to chess heaven.
